Suspension failure not caused by change in kerb use during race, says Alonso | Formula 1

Fernando Alonso doesn’t believe his retirement from the Italian Grand Prix was caused by him riding the kerbs too hard.

The Aston Martin driver dropped out of the race when he suffered a suspension failure as he rode the kerb at the exit of the high-speed Ascari corner. However Alonso said “we were using the kerbs the same all weekend, so I think it’s bad luck that we ended up having to retire.”

Alonso had jumped ahead of Gabriel Bortoleto through the pit stops and was on course to finish in the points when he retired. “It is frustrating, but I’m getting used to it, unfortunately,” he said after the race.

The Aston Martin driver was heading to his seventh points finish in eighth races until the failure occured. He has already suffered race-ending car failures in China and Monaco this year.

“It’s very frustrating because, again, we were in seventh place, another six points for the championship and we lost again,” Alonso told the official Formula 1 channel.

“I remember Monaco, retiring the car with an engine problem being P6. Today, having a suspension problem being in P7. So the luck definitely is not with us this year and we are losing a lot of points.

“But it was a well-executed race. We overtook Antonelli at the start, we overtook Bortoleto at the pit stop and everything was looking good.”

Today’s result leaves Alonso 12th in the drivers’ championship, one place and two points behind his team mate.

Lance Stroll started 16th and was the last runner to cross the line in 18th place. Stroll was unwilling to give any details about what happened in his race afterwards, replying “it was okay” when asked about it.
