Police in the Czech Republic have stopped a man driving a GP2 car, styled to look like a Ferrari Formula 1 chassis, on a public road.
The man was apprehended in Buk after his distinctive car was spotted speeding on the D4 motorway south of Prague.
“Thanks to reports from drivers, this morning we stopped a formula car driver in the village of Buk which had been speeding along the D4 motorway,” said a statement issued by the police force.
“Police identified the driver as a 51-year-old man and later took him to the district station to give an explanation.”
The police said the man was unwilling to co-operate. “The driver, who was stopped by the police and identified in the car, refused to comment on the whole situation when asked to explain. The police will proceed with the entire matter into administrative proceedings.”
The driver is likely to face a fine and a ban from driving, according to the police. He is believed to have been spotted driving the car on previous occasions over several years (see video below).
The car is a Dallara GP2/08 chassis, which was used by the former GP2 series between 2008 and 2010. The championship is now known as Formula 2.
The red livery and ‘Marlboro’ logos indicate the car is an unauthorised replica styled on Ferrari’s F1 cars of the mid-to-late 2000s. It carries the number seven, as used by Kimi Raikkonen when he drove for the Ferrari F1 team between 2014 and 2018.
Although it is not known whether any modifications have been made to the car, in its original guise the GP2/08 was powered by a Mecachrome four-litre V8 producing over 600bhp.
