McLaren paid Brown £37 million in 2024 as team won constructors’ title | Formula 1

McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown’s pay rose to £37.2 million last year as the team clinched the Formula 1 constructors’ championship title.

The team’s accounts confirmed its highest-paid director in 2024 received £37.252 million, up from £26.397m the year before. The Financial Times reported the director is Brown.

He joined McLaren as an executive director in 2016. He guided the team back to competitiveness, ending its engine supply deal with Honda and eventually reuniting with Mercedes.

Brown first appointed Andreas Seidl, then Andrea Stella to head the team. They scored their first grand prix victory for almost nine years in 2021, then became an increasingly competitive force from the middle of 2023.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri saw off a season-long challenge from rivals Ferrari to clinch the constructors’ championship in the final race of last season. They have been more dominant this year and McLaren are set to secure a second consecutive title in Singapore this weekend.

McLaren has also attracted a large roster of sponsors including well-known names such as Google, Dell and Ebay. The team recently announced Mastercard will have naming rights starting next year.

Brown’s 2024 earnings almost matches the £37.5m profit McLaren reported over the same period. This is more than triple the £11.5m they made in 2023, when their F1 team finished fourth in the constructors’ championship. Total management pay rose from £33m to £75m last year.

McLaren’s F1 programme accounts for the vast majority of its motorsport business. The Racing division, which principally covers its F1 team, had a turnover of £488m last year, compared to £45m for its IndyCar programme and £36m for its Formula E and Extreme E divisions.

McLaren withdrew from Formula E at the end of last season but has confirmed it will enter the World Endurance Championship in 2027.
