Sauber’s rookie driver Gabriel Bortoleto extended his remarkable run of out-qualifying his more experienced team mate at Monza.
Team mate battles
The Italian Grand Prix is the sixth consecutive weekend in which Bortoleto beat his team mate Nico Hulkenberg in qualifying. The rookie now leads their qualifying battle 10-6.
Among F1’s new intake of drivers for this year, only Isack Hadjar has a bigger lead, but he is up against a far less experienced team mate in Liam Lawson. The only other rookie leading a qualifying battle is Oliver Bearman, who moved ahead of Esteban Ocon today.
Also this weekend Carlos Sainz Jnr out-qualified his Williams team mate Alexander Albon for the third event in a row. That ties the pair 8-8 in their qualifying battle this year.
Fernando Alonso 15 – 0 Lance Stroll
George Russell 15 – 1 Andrea Kimi Antonelli
Max Verstappen 13 – 0 Yuki Tsunoda
Charles Leclerc 12 – 4 Lewis Hamilton
Isack Hadjar 11 – 3 Liam Lawson

Q1 eliminations and Q3 appearances
Until today, Hadjar had made it at least as far as Q2 in every grand prix qualifying session he had entered. That impressive run ended today as he dropped out in Q1 for the first time – by just eight hundredths of a second.

Gaps between team mates
Hadjar was at least comfortably quicker than team mate Liam Lawson. This was the largest gap between any pair of team mates on the grid except at Red Bull, where Max Verstappen was twice as far ahead of Yuki Tsunoda.
Which will be food for thought for Hadjar if he is handed the chance to replace Tsunoda at Red Bull next year.
