A race suit worn by the legendary Michael Schumacher at the 2000 Hungarian Grand Prix has sold for €95,650 in an online auction staged by Bonhams Cars in partnership with The Schumacher Lounge.
The lot closed on 19 September as part of The Schumacher Lounge Online Auction, which ran from 29 August through 19 September.
The Ferrari overalls, finished in the team’s signature red with period sponsors, including the iconic Marlboro logo, carry the German’s signature on the chest. And they’re race-worn, with the auction house confirming that they were used for the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring, where Schumacher started from pole position but finished second behind the defending champion Mika Hakkinen.
This race moved Hakkinen to the top of the drivers’ standings with just five races left in the season. But Schumacher was close behind, with his Ferrari firmly in contention, and, by the penultimate race of the year in Japan, he won the championship – his first with the Scuderia and the first of five with the team.
This auction is yet another example of a strong result from period Schumacher memorabilia, with the same auction also selling a 1995 Benetton suit and a signed 2003 Ferrari replica helmet for €61,360 and €11,520, respectively. Fortunately, a percentage of these sales is benefiting the Keep Fighting Foundation, established by the Schumacher family in 2017.
