Isack Hadjar wants to keep his original trophy from his first podium finish at Zandvoort despite breaking it.
The Racing Bulls driver’s third-place trophy broke into two parts during his celebration after the Dutch Grand Prix last week.
Hadjar said his team is handling what to do with the damaged cup. “I don’t even know where my broken trophy is,” he told the official Formula 1 channel. “The team is taking care of it, I guess. I left it within good hands.
“I don’t know what’s going on. But I’ll get a new one, I know that. But I want my broken one.”
Hadjar said the original broken trophy means more to him than a replacement. “The new one – we don’t care about the new one because it’s not been part of the grand prix history,” he explained.
“I don’t care about this one, it’s not special. I want the broken one because it’s part of my podium journey. The new one doesn’t smell of alcohol, like the champagne and whatever.”
Despite his satisfaction at reaching the podium for the first time in his career, Hadjar said he is most proud of the improvements he and the team made during the weekend after a technical problem prevented him running in the second practice session on Friday.
“During the race, I knew I was going to finish fourth,” he said. “I was like, okay, I’m in control of the fourth place. I was doing an outstanding job so first it was a win already to finish fourth on pure pace, beating Ferraris, Mercedes. And obviously, the podium is the cherry on the cake.
“But the most important [thing] is what we’ve built, the turnaround we did from Friday to Saturday. That’s what I remember.”
