Lando Norris put McLaren on top in the second practice session for the Italian Grand Prix but his team mate is under investigation by the stewards.
Championship leader Oscar Piastri caught the stewards’ attention when the session restarted following a red flag period. They are looking into whether he joined the fast lane of the pits too early, before the restart signal was given.
Piastri, who did not participate in the first practice session as Alexander Dunne drove his car, ended the session fourth overall. Charles Leclerc took second for the second session in a row, followed by Carlos Sainz, the pair within a tenth of a second off Norris’s time.
Lewis Hamilton ensured both Ferraris appeared in the top five. Max Verstappen was sixth-quickest, complaining his Red Bull was reacting strongly to the bumps on the track. However his team mate Yuki Tsunoda backed him up in ninth place, less than two tenths of a second behind.
The pair were separated by Alexander Albon, who underlined Williams’ strong showing over the two practice sessions. Nico Hulkenberg took eighth while George Russell, back on track after his stoppage in the first session, completed the top 10.
His was the only Mercedes still running at the end of the session. Andrea Kimi Antonelli suffered a spin at Lesmo 2 early in the session which left him stuck in a gravel trap, much as was the case at Zandvoort on Friday last week. Practice was red-flagged while his car was recovered.
Gabriel Bortoleto is also under investigation for a potential yellow flag infringement which occured around this time. He appeared to pass a rivals’ car while the warning flags were out. Like Piastri, he faces investigation after the session.
