Norris stays on top as Stroll crashes heavily in second practice | Formula 1

Lando Norris remained the driver to beat in the second practice session at Zandvoort, which was interrupted by two red flags.

The first was caused by Lance Stroll when he crashed heavily at the steeply banked Hugenholzbocht. Running the same high line around the corner a his rivals, Stroll carried too much speed in, snatched a brake and almost instantly found himself in the barrier.

The impact caused extensive damage to the right-hand side of the Aston Martin. However Stroll, who missed the Spanish Grand Prix in June due to pain in the wrist he broke two years ago, appeared unhurt in the crash.

Drivers had been quick to begin work in the session as the forecast indicated a strong chance of rain. However by the time Stroll’s crash had been cleared the clouds had passed to the west of the circuit and conditions remained dry.

The teams therefore took advantage of the opportunity to conduct more qualifying simulations on soft rubber. Norris chipped almost four tenths of a second off his best time from the morning, lapping in 1’09.890.

His team mate Oscar Piastri got closer, the pair separated by less than nine hundredths of a second. However Fernando Alonso got in between them in the sole remaining Aston Martin, pipping Piastri by two thousandths.

George Russell was almost four tenths of a second down in fourth place after a near-miss with Piastri in the pits. The McLaren driver initially appeared to turn in to McLaren’s pit box, the swung back out again, prompting Russell to lock up. The stewards are investigating the incident.

The absence of rain was good news for Russell’s team mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, after his error in the first practice session confined him to just six laps. He completed the session and set the 12th fastest time.

Max Verstappen took fifth ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who spun for the second time in as many sessions on his first flying lap. Their respective team mates were next, Tsunoda just three tenths of a second off Verstappen.

Alexander Albon’s session came to an early end when he went off at Tarzan, much as Verstappen did at the end of the earlier session, and was unable to continue. That caused the second red flag. A technical problem on Isack Hadjar’s car meant he managed just one lap of the track before coming to a stop.
