Ocon disqualified after car fails rear wing test | Formula 1

Esteban Ocon has been disqualified from the results of today’s qualifying session after his Haas failed a rear wing legality check.

The Haas driver originally qualified 18th.

The FIA confirmed the main plane tips on Ocon’s rear wing failed their deflection tests. The regulations allow a maximum deflection of 0.5 millimetres, but Ocon’s moved by 0.825mm on the right-hand side and 0.6mm on the left-hand side.

“The team conceded that the test procedure as outlined in the regulations had been followed and explained that the discrepancy was a result of a problem with the production of the assembly of this specific part,” the stewards noted.

Ocon will be permitted to start the race but will be relegated to the back of the grid.

The stewards also ruled on yellow flag infringements involving Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Nico Hulkenberg.

Antonelli was given his first reprimand of the season as the stewards ruled he overtook two cars after a yellow indicator light appeared “very briefly” on his steering wheel during Q1.

“The driver of car 12 [Antonelli] was not shown a yellow flag or yellow light panel however his dash did very briefly display a yellow indication which then disappeared,” they noted. “The driver passed two cars then the team advised him to abandon the lap as there was concern that perhaps there was a double yellow flag condition (when in fact there was not). The driver then abandoned the lap. No sporting advantage was gained.

“In view of the mitigating circumstances and consistent with previous similar incidents a reduced penalty of a reprimand is imposed.”

The stewards issued no penalty to Hulkenberg after ruling he had been unable to see a yellow flag which was waved during the final practice session after Lewis Hamilton went off ahead of him at turn one.

“A yellow flag was [waved] at turn one as car 27 [Hulkenberg] approached,” the stewards explained. “After the turn, car 27 overtook car 44 [Hamilton], which was travelling at a significantly slower speed than car 27, prior to the green light displayed between turns one and two. This all occurred after the chequered flag had been displayed.

“The driver of car 27 advised that he could not see the yellow flag because it was displayed after he began turning into the apex of turn one. He then could not see the green panel because it was obstructed by car 44 in front so he had no idea until he passed car 44 that he was in a yellow flag area.

“Technically, this was a breach of the regulations however in view of the mitigating circumstances outlined above, the stewards determine to apply no penalty.”
