- Born on this day in 1918: Georges Berger, who entered two F1 races in the fifties, then died during the 1967 Marathon de la Route, a monster 84-hour (three-and-a-half day) endurance race at the Nurburgring Nordschleife
- 45 years ago today Nelson Piquet took the championship lead from Alan Jones by leading him home in the Italian Grand Prix, which for the first time was held by Imola
